Do you pay tax on gambling winnings in the UK?

Short answer: no. In the UK, a player’s gambling winnings are completely free of tax. Here is why that is true, what the rising "gambling taxes" in the news actually mean, and how it compares with other countries.

The one-line version

The operator, through gambling duties — not you

Winnings are 100% tax-free for players

HMRC does not treat gambling winnings as taxable income. Whether you win £2 from an accumulator or a life-changing jackpot, you keep the full amount — there is no Income Tax and no Capital Gains Tax on the win itself. You do not need to declare gambling winnings on a Self Assessment tax return, because they are not income in the tax sense. This applies across the board: sports betting, online casino and slots, bingo, poker and the National Lottery are all tax-free at the point you win.

The logic is simple. Rather than tax millions of individual players, the UK taxes the businesses that take the bets. That duty is built into the operator’s costs, not deducted from your winnings, which is why what lands in your account is exactly what you won.

It’s the operators who are taxed — and those duties are rising

You may have seen headlines about gambling taxes going up. Those changes affect operators, not players. The main duties are moving as follows:

  • Remote Gaming Duty (online casino, slots and bingo) rises from 21% to 40% from 1 April 2026.
  • A new Remote Betting Duty of 25% on online betting is due from 1 April 2027.
  • Betting on UK horse racing is set to keep a lower rate of 15%.

These are taxes on the operator’s gross gambling yield. They may, over time, influence the offers and prices operators can afford to give, but they do not create any tax liability for you as a player. Your winnings remain tax-free.

How this compares

The tax-free treatment is one of the genuine advantages of gambling in a regulated UK market. In some other countries, players can face withholding or income tax on winnings; in Great Britain they do not. That is a strong reason to stick to UK Gambling Commission-licensed operators rather than offshore sites — the legal, regulated market is where the tax-free position, and your consumer protections, apply.
